What are dentures? When multiple teeth are not present, a patient's bite is affected. The simple task of eating and chewing becomes difficult or impossible due to the missing teeth. Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They are made out of an acrylic resin base and either plastic or porcelain teeth. Properly fitting dentures can restore your self-esteem, improve the ability to speak and eat, as well as maintain the structure of your face, giving you a more youthful appearance. Types of dentures: COMPLETE DENTURES Complete dentures are indicated when all of the teeth are missing, or will be removed. The level of comfort in wearing your full dentures depends on your muscles, bones, tongue, and saliva. Upper full dentures usually have more retention and are easier to wear than lower full dentures. IMMEDIATE DENTURES Immediate dentures are complete dentures which are fabricated prior to the extraction of all of your teeth and delivered after the teeth are removed. This enables you to have dentures immediately when you go home on the day of extractions. Immediate dentures are more difficult to wear initially due to the sore gums and bones healing after teeth are removed. It takes several months for the gums and bones to stabilize after the extractions, which will result in the dentures feeling loose over this period of time. We recommend a laboratory reline after the tissues heal, usually at least six months after the extractions are performed, to ensure continued proper fit of the dentures. PARTIAL DENTURES Partial dentures are indicated when some of the teeth are missing and need to be replaced to fill the gaps in your smile. The partial denture is anchored to your natural teeth with a metal framework, which helps prevent your teeth from shifting and maintains your tooth alignment.
