How to Get Rid of Cavities

Have you ever wondered how to get rid of cavities? In addition to professional care, there are several ways to eliminate and prevent cavities from coming back. Your dentist can usually detect cavities during a routine checkup. You may also feel some pain or sensitivity around the affected tooth.

Understanding the Different Types of Cavities

Some cavities may be more difficult to get rid of than others. It depends on the type of cavity you have. Three main types of cavities include smooth surface, pit & fissure, and root cavities. All three can cause pain and further damage to your teeth and gums. Therefore, it is important to learn how to get rid of cavities as soon as possible.

Treatment for Cavities

Once your dentist identifies a cavity, they will diagnose what type of cavity you have and provide treatment recommendations for how to get rid of cavities. There are different types of treatment options, including:

Root Canals

Root canal work provides an option for how to get rid of cavities. A root canal is necessary when the pulp in your tooth has decayed. The dentist removes the affected area of the tooth and then replaces it with a filling. They may also provide medication to prevent further infection.

A tooth may suffer enough damage from tooth decay that it can’t be restored, so your dentist will need to remove it. You may want to consider replacing the tooth with a crown, bridge, or dental implant preventing further tooth decay, problems with your gums, or jawbone.

Fluoride Treatments

If your cavity is new, a fluoride treatment may be enough to reverse the cavity so that it disappears. Fluoride restores the enamel and strengthens your tooth. Your dentist can provide fluoride treatments in the form of a liquid, gel, foam, or varnish. Follow up with a daily mouthwash that contains fluoride.

Once your tooth has decayed to a certain point, your dentist will need to replace the decayed area with a filling. Also known as restorations, fillings can replace the decayed area and prevent tooth decay in the future. Fillings are made of resins, porcelain, or a dental amalgam. They restore both the look and function of your tooth.

Crowns can replace and prevent tooth decay from re-occurring – particularly if you brush and floss every day. They are especially valuable if you have extensive decay or weak teeth. Your dentist puts a custom covering over the affected area. Your teeth will look like new once again. Crowns can be made from gold, porcelain, resin, or a fusion of metals.
