On November 14th 2014, Dr. Brayer, of Creating Smiles Dental, and her family of 3 children are going to be sleeping in cardboard boxes to help fight homelessness. The week of November 9th is Homeless Awareness Week. This event takes place that week. Families are willing to give up their own beds to sleep in a cardboard box to raise the awareness AND the money to give a bed to somebody who does not have one. Local businesses including Fishy Face Photography have donated to Dr. Brayer’s children. $50 is helping the local volunteer families (like Dr. Brayer and her children) to be able to sleep in a cardboard box for the purpose of bringing awareness to the fact that there are 3095 homeless children in Pinellas County.
This event will raise money for the Family Promise of Pinellas County. Family Promise helps homeless children and their parents to gain long-lasting independence, with a success rate of helping 75% of the families get that independence in 63 days.
Homeless families are an ever increasing challenge in Pinellas County, with a minimum of 430 families living with their children in cars or on the street every day. Pinellas County maintains one of the highest rates in the State of Florida. Cardboard City is designed to gain the participation of local youth (the decision makers of tomorrow), and at the same time, attract the media and community attention to effect needed change. Students will build and live as many homeless families do, in a cardboard box.
