Volunteering with GCDO
Dr. Brayer and her staff are committed to their community and volunteering with GCDO, or Gulf Coast Dental Outreach.
This program is such a good service to Pinellas County. A pool of volunteer dentists and paid and volunteer support staff members see patients on most Fridays. It is a normal practice Monday-Thursday then they put up their sign on the door to see grateful patients.
Patients are accepted primarily by referral and have a chance to be accepted into the program if they financially qualify – Gulf Coast Dental Outreach is not a walk-in clinic. Patients pay just $25 for most procedures. Patient care emphasizes preventive treatment, such as hygiene visits, and also includes crowns, dentures and other procedures. They take care of the volunteers and always have bagels and snacks for us for the morning huddle.
These pictures are from last August when Dr. Brayer took Tiffany and Giang with her to volunteer their dental expertise.
Giang is assisting Tiffany with the periodontal exam and cleaning here.
Dr. Brayer performed various procedures for many patients and was assisted by her own dental assistant, Giang.
This time, Dr. Brayer brought the same two who have volunteered many times before. You see Tiffany’s baby bump here, she will have a brand new baby next time that Dr. Brayer volunteers here so she will probably not go the next time.
Dr. Brayer performed exams and filled cavities this time.
We were lucky to be there for Gulf Coast Dental Outreach’s first day of going digital with their x-rays. By the end of the day, Rhonda, who is the one who coordinates EVERYTHING between the patients and clinicians was ready to smash the laptop! The x-rays were successful, and more what we’re used to here at Creating Smiles Dental, but there was a little extra stress on trouble shooting the new program that day 🙂
We left happy, knowing we had done a good service to the many deserving, appreciative patients that day. Dr. Brayer and Giang actually went back to the office to see a couple of our own patients in the late afternoon. They love to volunteer and love to work!
